At least 40 persons were hospitalised on Friday after toxic fumes leaked from a pesticide factory in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district, The Hindu reported.

The leak at a Crimsun Organics factory in Kudikadu village was suspected to have come from a pipeline connected to a reactor.

It triggered panic in nearby villages as thick fumes spread through the area, forcing residents to leave their homes.

A team of police officials and representatives from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the leak, The Hindu quoted an unidentified official as saying.

In 2021, four persons died at the same facility after a boiler mixer machine exploded.

According to environmental activist T Arul Selvam, the blast in 2021 had occurred because safety norms were neglected.
