The Ministry of External Affairs has warned Indian citizens against accepting offers to join the Russian Army, emphasising that doing so was “fraught with danger”. The advisory came a day after a media report said at least 15 Indians were stranded in Ukraine and forced to fight alongside the Russian military.

India has taken up the matter with Russian authorities in New Delhi and Moscow, “asking that this practice be ended and that our nationals be released”, said ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

In July, the ministry said 127 Indian citizens had joined the Russian armed forces since the war on Ukraine began in February 2022. Of the total, 98 Indians had returned to India, while 13 were still deployed. Twelve of them were reported missing by the Russian side. Read on.
