The Central Reserve Police Force has sent a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge flagging alleged security protocol violations by party leader Rahul Gandhi during his movements, PTI quoted unidentified officials as saying on Thursday.

In response, the Congress questioned the timing of the letter amid its allegations of electoral fraud.

The Very Important Person Security Wing is a specialised unit of the paramilitary force that provides “Z-plus ASL” armed protection to Gandhi, who is the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

This category of security includes about 10 to 12 armed CRPF commandos providing proximate cover to Gandhi whenever he is travelling. It also includes ASL, or Advanced Security Liaison, under which the paramilitary force carries out an early reconnaissance of the locations he will visit.

In a letter sent to Kharge on Wednesday, the VIP security unit of the paramilitary force flagged certain “unscheduled movements without intimation” by Gandhi during his domestic visits, PTI quoted the sources as saying.

Gandhi also does not provide information in advance about his foreign visits, the Deccan Herald quoted CRPF officials as having claimed.

The CRPF wing, in the letter, noted that unannounced movements pose a risk to the “high risk” VIP, The Indian Express quoted unidentified officials as saying.
