A court in Kolkata on Wednesday sent Bangla Pokkho chief Garga Chatterjee to three days in police custody till May 16, Kausik Maiti, a member of the pro-Bengali advocacy group, told Scroll.
This came a day after Chatterjee was arrested by the Kolkata Police for allegedly spreading misinformation about Electronic Voting Machines ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Chatterjee was arrested by the cybercrime division following a complaint by an Election Commission official.
While one first information report was registered against him at the Maidan Police Station based on the complaint filed by the Election Commission official, another FIR was filed by the cybercrime division after it took suo moto cognisance of the matter.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand earlier said that Chatterjee had posted on social media about alleged EVM tampering and malpractices in the election process, ANI reported. “This caused different perceptions among political parties and also created confusion,” the police chief said.
The police had sent notices twice to Chatterjee, asking him to appear for questioning, the news agency quoted Nand as saying. However, he did not appear before the authorities, due to which he was arrested, added the police commissioner.
