Congress MP from Assam Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party on Tuesday, ahead of the assembly polls in the state.
His resignation came less than a month after former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah quit the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Ahead of his resignation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had publicly invited Bordoloi to join the BJP, though he said that there had been no direct communication between them. Bordoloi later told The Times of India that he had received an offer from the BJP, but did not clarify whether he would accept it.
The Congress described his resignation as “very unfortunate”, The Hindu reported. Congress leader Subrata Borah said that Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and Congress in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh had visited Bordoloi’s residence to persuade him to reconsider.
Bordoloi is one of the Congress’s three Lok Sabha MPs from Assam. He has also served as a minister in Congress governments in the state led by former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.
In a statement to ANI, Bordoloi said that he had felt “humiliated” on certain matters.
