Top election updates: Amarinder Singh’s party announces 22 candidates for Punjab polls

A look at the latest developments on Assembly elections from the five states:

  • Former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday announced the first list of his party Punjab Lok Congress candidates from 22 constituencies for the state Assembly elections, reported PTI. Former captain of Indian hockey team Ajit Pal Singh has been fielded from the Nakodar seat. Singh will contest the Patiala Urban seat. The Punjab Lok Congress, which is in an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party, has been allotted 37 to contest out of the 117 seats in the state.
  • BJP General Secretary Tarun Chugh said that the party will nominate Sikh candidates on more than half of the total seats it will contest in the Punjab Assembly polls, reported PTI. From the alliance, he said that it is expected that most of its candidates will be from the Sikh community, especially farmers and members of the Other Backward Class.
  • The Apna Dal (Sonelal), an ally of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, has fielded a Muslim candidate for the first time since 2014 for state Assembly polls, reported ANI. The candidate, Haider Ali Khan, will contest the Suar seat in western Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district.
